Awoke early again this morning to find us wending our way through the fjord to the tiny town of Flam. Looks to be a great day without a cloud in the sky - for now! We have sailed a long way from the coast! (See map).
We went ashore about 10:00 to explore Flam. We have an excursion scheduled for noon called "Flam Railroad, Waterfalls, and Waffles". Flam is a squeeky clean little village. Of course dependent on tourism so there are several shops featuring all things Norwegian. I was interested in a sweater but not for $300! There is a gorgeous hotel called "Tretheim Hotel". A popular activity seems to be cycling; taking your bike up the mountain on the train and riding back down. Looks like great fun! We stopped for coffee and a croissant.
At noon, about 150 of us from the ship boarded the famous "Flamsbana" which would take us up to about 2600 feet in 60 minutes. We'll pass through some 20 tunnels and multiple waterfalls. We did a quick 5 minute stop to see the "Kjosfossen Waterfall", and incredible amount of water pouring down the mountain and under the railroad. We even saw "Huldra", the enchantress, with her flowing blond hair and red dress, complete with McKenna-like music.
At the summit we find the old Vatnahalsen Hotel where we were treated to coffee and waffles with jam and sour cream. I was a little disappointed with this place. I was expecting a grand view down the valley, but no.
We returned to Flam about 4:30 and went back to the ship to put our feet up until dinner. I fact, the weather was so nice we sat on our veranda and soaked up some rays! This day will probably be the best weather of our whole trip.
Our entertainment tonight was dancers and dueling pianos.
Tomorrow we visit Bergen.
