Thursday June 1 Aselund

Awoke early this morning as we approached the dock in Aselund. Interesting to watch the ship turn 180 degrees and back into the dock. Aselund is a fairly large city with a population of about 50k. The major industry here is fishing (its the largest commercial fishing port in the country) and ship building. The city is known for the 1904 fire which nearly destroyed the downtown area. Most of it was rebuilt in the “Art Noveau” style. The city is comprised of five islands connected by three tunnels and two bridges.

Soon after we arrived, we were joined by the Celebrity Silouette. So, between the two of us, there would be some 5,000 tourists going ashore!

We did not have an excursion scheduled for today so after breakfast we went ashore to see what was what. We ended up doing a city tour for an hour on a little “train”. Most importantly, it took us to the top of the famous Mount Aklsa. There's a viewpoint on top which is spectacular. Many brave souls actually hike to the top up 400+ steps!

Returning to the terminal area we had a great lunch at a little cafe called “Evergreen”. Then just walking around, stopping at the various curio and souvenir shops. We even came across a mall with nice department stores. Norway is basically a “cashless society”. You can use your card for everything, any where.

As we left the city and returned to the open ocean, the ship got a little bumpy! Dinner tonight was one of our two “special” dinners – The Tamarind. I didn't care for it; a bit too spicy. From our table we could watch the water sloshing around in the pool.

The Main Stage tonight featured the comedian Stephen Garcia we saw the other night, with a different act. Totally hysterical!

Looking forward to tomorrow when we visit Flam!
